Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Singapore

Over 2000 women get diagnosed with it yearly and although the exact cause is unknown, certain risk factors such as a family history of breast cancer, being over the age of 40, having had an early onset of menstruation or being on hormone replacement therapy can all contribute to it.

Hence, apart from doing monthly breast self-examinations, it is also important to go for regular mammogram screenings in Singapore

Read on to find out more about how a breast cancer screening via mammogram can save lives.

What is a mammogram screening?

using a low X -ray examination in singapore

It entails using a low-dose X-ray examination on the breasts to check for any abnormalities such as lumps or early signs of breast cancer

During a mammogram, the breasts will be compressed between two plates of the X-ray machine for a few seconds so as to allow the radiologist to capture a clear image. The image will then be assessed by a doctor to determine if there are any abnormalities.

A mammogram screening is currently the most accurate method to detect breast cancer even before any lump or abnormality is seen or felt.

What is the importance of early detection?

Mammogram screening is not recommended if you are below 40 but it will not hurt to arrange for regular breast ultrasound once you are above age 30 for peace of mind. However, if you are over 40, it is advisable to go for a mammogram every year and once every two years if you are above 50, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

According to the Singapore Cancer Registry, 1 in every 13 women may develop breast cancer. Thus, regular mammogram screening is always recommended as early detection can drastically increase one’s survival rate by over 90% through the appropriate treatment, if in the stages of 0 or 1.

What to take note of before going for a mammogram screening

These are what you have to take note of if you have decided to go for a mammogram screening

  • Schedule your appointment for when your breasts will not be tender or swollen to reduce the discomfort. Avoid the week before your period as your breasts may be engorged.
  • Do not apply any deodorant, perfume, lotion or cream as certain substances may show up in images and look like calcifications – a sign of an underlying issue in the breast tissues.
  • Bring your past mammogram records with you so that your doctor has a clearer idea of your medical history.
  • Tell your doctor or radiologist about any breast changes or problems you are experiencing.
  • Let your radiologist know if you have any breast implants or think you might be pregnant.
  • The entire mammogram screening process will take about 20 minutes while the compression of your breasts will only last for a few seconds.
  • Let your radiologist know immediately if you feel any unbearable discomfort during the process.
